It's always a good day when I get to talk about a Venn diagram. This one is important, so pay attention. We are all guilty of this at one time or another. You've been consistently getting into the gym, but you aren't seeing any results. What's the deal?
The deal is that exercise is only one piece of the puzzle. I found this diagram on inthecave.com. The idea is that sleep, nutrition, and exercise all contribute to efficient fitness. Obviously, we could elaborate this to include stress and other factors, but this is a great start. You work out 5 days a week, but you're not seeing any results? Maybe you should try sleeping more than 4 hours a night. Or maybe you should stop eating fast food every day.
Exercise to the extent that your sleep and nutrition allow. Example: You're super stressed at work, sleeping 3 hours a night, and eating... well, everything. This is not the time to start coming twice a day, every day of the week. Can exercise help relieve stress and facilitate better sleep? Absolutely. My point is that this is not a recipe for elite fitness. On the other hand: Let's say you're getting 8 hours every night and eating super clean. Now it's time to light it up! Get into the gym, and let's see what you can do!
